In 1851, "Dr." Samuel Cartwright, then a well-respected physician, described a new/old mental disorder unique to the enslaved Americans: Drapetomania. It was the enslaved person's "uncontrollable urge" to run away from enslavement. Cartwright also said that this mania could be prevented by "beating the devil out of them", or in some cases, cutting off their (our) toes.
This same pseudo-science supporting supremacist sentiment is still demonstrated when Black advocates & activists are told their desires for basic freedoms are deemed as "extreme" or the idea that demanding respect from politicians is "crazy." Somehow, Black people are the only people for whom the desire for basic human freedom is seen as an insane wish. However, many, if not most, of our heroes were told that their plans and goals and demands for freedom were just fantasies. Until they weren't.
